JAKE HUMPHREY ON SPORTS PERSONALITY Sunday's Sports Personality of the Year Award show will be the biggest the BBC has ever put on. This hasn't been your average year of sport, so it can't be a normal Sports Personality of the Year. We have to match the brilliance we have seen by British sportsmen and women over the last 12 months. It's going to be so difficult for you, the British public, to pick a winner from the 10 contenders. I think the 'personality' side of the award may be even more significant this year as all 10 have got to the very top of the tree in their chosen sports. It's going to be hard to decide that X is better than Y or A is better than B and it may well come down to who you like the most. There will be 9,000 enthusiastic people packed into Liverpool's Echo Arena. Liverpool is a city that loves its sport and as the 2008 European Capital of Culture, it felt like the natural home for the event. And we've got some great surprises in store, with Olympians doing things you'd never imagine them doing, a stellar guest list and some great music. This is my first time working at the event and I'm very honoured. The first sign I got that I might be presenting was when my co-presenter Sue Barker called me and said: "Have you had a phone call today?" I hadn't but she said: "Well, you will and at first you'll be very excited, then that excitement will give way to anxiety and panic for a few weeks." She was right, I am nervous but it's going to be a very special night. May the best person win, Jake Jake Humphrey co-presents the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award with Sue Barker and Gary Lineker on Sunday night. Jake was talking to Paul Birch. |
