NEXT PANORAMA - HAVE I GOT BAD LANGUAGE FOR YOU? - 8.30PM ON BBC ONE

WATCHING HISTORY

The Panorama office joined millions around the world as we sat glued to our televisions on Tuesday to watch the historic moment when Barack Obama was sworn in as the 44th President of America.

The excitment of the enormous crowds lining the streets in Washington was palpable, but Obama's inauguration speech made it plain that he sees tough times ahead. It's a loaded inbox that welcomes him to the White House.

Las week's Panorama explored Obama's election pledge to reform America's healthcare system - just one of many challenges he faces in his presidency.

OMAGH UPDATE

In Panorama's Omagh: What The Police Were Never Told it was revealed that GCHQ had been eavesdropping on some of the mobile telephones used to coordinate the Omagh bombing.

The programme broadcast on 15th September last year also alleged that the detectives whose job it was to catch the bombers were never given vital intelligence that had been gleaned from the GCHQ intercepts.

Two days after transmission Prime Minister Gordon Brown ordered Sir Peter Gibson to conduct an intelligence review.

The official report published this week rejects claims that vital intelligence about the Omagh bombing was deliberately held back.

BACK IN THE NEWS

The mother of Shannon Matthews and co-accused Michael Donovan have been sentenced to eight years in prison.

Both were earlier found guilty of kidnap, false imprisonment and perverting the course of justice for kidnapping Shannon in an attempt to secure thousands of pounds of reward money.

In December a Panorama special Shannon: The Mother of All Lies told the inside story of the police operation to find the nine-year-old.

MOUTHING OFF

As Jonathan Ross returns this week to BBC One following a three month suspension, Monday's Panorama asks just how permissive do the public want broadcasters to be?

The Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross row certainly got the nation talking about taste and decency.

Comedian Frank Skinner looks into whether broadcasters are falling below the standards demanded of them.

He quizzes some of the top people in the terrestrial channels about their content.

Plus he asks other leading comedians how they feel about swearing on stage and on television.

Panorama: Have I Got Bad Language For You? is on BBC One, Monday 26 January at 8.30pm.
