HAZEL IRVINE AT THE BRITISH MASTERS
Graeme McDowell said after his first round here at the British Masters that it was a case of getting back to reality after last weekend's Ryder Cup.

The Ryder Cup has been such a huge tournament on everyone's horizon for the last two years and now it's over inevitably there's some realignment required for him and fellow European team-mate Lee Westwood.

Westwood, the defending champion here at the Belfry, has shown no ill effects from what was a difficult experience for him in Valhalla as he's started the British Masters with a bang.

It will be interesting to see if he can keep it up and a lot will depend on his fitness.

He said he could feel the jet-lag in his legs yesterday but the money on offer at this tournament could prove crucial in his bid to top the European Tour's Order of Merit.

Westwood and McDowell are the only two players competing here out of the current top six in the race to be crowned Europe's best golfer of 2008.

So it's a huge incentive for them to win this week as they could really steal a march on current leader Padraig Harrington.

It's shaping up to be one of the closest races for quite a while and it's going to be a fascinating conclusion to the season.

I love the Belfry and every time I turn up here I get echoes of Ryder Cups past.

Having played here a couple of times now it's a really challenging course, particularly for someone like me who seems to have a magnetic appeal to water.

A host of big names have won this event and the history of it goes back to 1946, making it one of the oldest events on the European Tour.

So what a privilege it would be for one of the players in the field to join some of the greats that have won it.

Enjoy the weekend,

Hazel
