TONIGHT ON PANORAMA - WHAT ARE WE FIGHTING FOR? - 8.30PM ON BBC ONE Hi, WHAT ARE WE FIGHTING FOR? In this week's programme, Jane Corbin returns to Afghanistan, eight years after the fall of the Taliban, to witness President Hamid Karzai's new democracy. His government promised women equality and human rights under the law, but Jane finds the vast majority of women are still downtrodden and desperate. Despite the stories of women being sold, beaten and abused, there are also brave women risking their lives every day to fight for equal rights. Read Jane's article about some of the women she met in Afghanistan. There are other interesting features and video clips about the programme on the Panorama website. Panorama: What Are We Fighting For? is on BBC One, Monday 17 August at 8.30pm. BABY P In the last week, the couple responsible for the death of 17-month-old Baby Peter were named as his mother, Tracey Connelly, and her partner Steven Barker. Peter had more than 50 injuries, including fractured ribs and a broken back, when he was found dead at home in August 2007. In November last year, Panorama's six-month long investigation revealed the mistakes and missed opportunities that led to the boy's death. Reporter Alison Holt had further revelations on the case in May's programme. THE TRUTH ABOUT HAPPY HOUR Last week Richard Bilton went to Oldham where the council has taken a radical new approach to tackle binge drinking. In The Truth About Happy Hour, we find out how the Lancashire town is trying to enforce a minimum price of 75p a unit in a bid to reduce alcohol-related violence. Richard tried out a bar that makes it hard to get drunk and looked at the battle against cheap drinks promotions. If you missed the programme you can watch it on the Panorama website. You can also read Richard's feature about his time in Oldham here. PANORAMA CALLOUT Panorama is currently conducting research for a programme on the criminal justice system. We want to know whether you have had recent experience of the system - and whether you believe it is working successfully. We also want to hear from you if you have knowledge of cases in which offenders have escaped justice or have been allowed to re-offend because in your view the system has not worked properly. Please email panorama@bbc.co.uk putting 'Justice' in the subject heading. That's all from us for this week but you can keep up to date with Panorama on our website. And remember you can e-mail us anytime at panorama@bbc.co.uk bbc.co.uk/panorama |
