KEITH WOOD ON THE SIX NATIONS
I'm not overstating it but the only thing that seems to be putting a bit of colour in people's cheeks in Ireland at the moment is the national rugby team.

Over here everyone seems to be in the depths of depression with the recession and everything else that's going on, so hopefully this will be the best weekend of the year when England arrive in Dublin.

I was delighted with Ireland's performance against the French. They played very well and looked incredibly fit and will benefit from having a week's break after the Italy game.

England will be looking to build on their improved performance against Wales and their capacity to play a stultifying game means they could eke out a win, but I fancy Ireland to prevail.

In a Six Nations first, there is a match on a Friday night as Wales travel to Paris to take on France.

I'm not a huge fan of the idea of Friday night kick-offs as I think games should always be on a weekend afternoon.

It should be a game for the rugby purists, but I can't make head-nor-tail of France's selection policy. If coach Marc Lievremont could pick five different teams a week he would.

It makes it a hard game to predict as you don't know what French team will turn up, but I'm going for an away win for the impressive Welsh.

The likely battle for the wooden spoon takes place at Murrayfield on Saturday with Scotland facing Italy.

Scotland are still lacking some outside backs and that is definitely the missing link in their team. They have some gas on the outside so if they could just shore up the centres they could become a pretty decent side.

Enjoy the weekend,

Keith
