JOHN INVERDALE ON THE SIX NATIONS
Facing Italy at home was the best possible draw England could have asked for to begin their Six Nations campaign.

It's not about how they win, it's just about winning.

I certainly didn't expect to see fly-half Andy Goode back in an England shirt, but this is the perfect game for him and I can see him kicking the ball miles into Italian territory and pinning them back.

In a match England simply have to win, his is quite a shrewd selection.

Martin Johnson's team smacks a little of short-termism, but England are in a position where they have to consider the short term before they can look to the long term.

They are starting the road to recovery and you can't just keep building for the future as sometimes that future never comes.

On Saturday evening Ireland play France and we've been saying every year that the Irish should win the Six Nations Championship, but people aren't saying it this time round so maybe this is the year they'll do it!

As for the French, there are players in their team that people will barely have heard of.

Their teams have been disappointing in the Heineken Cup. Only one team has made it through to the last eight which is almost unheard of.

Is French rugby in a bit of slump? It's anyone guess how they will get on.

I'm really looking forward to Sunday's match between Scotland and Wales in Edinburgh.

It's impossible to call. You'd fancy the Welsh to win but the weather will be a huge factor and could impact on Wales' ability to run the ball.

What does favour Wales is Scotland's decision to drop expert kicker Chris Paterson. It's going to be such a tight match that if it comes down to a kicking duel I'd fancy Stephen Jones or James Hook to give Wales the win.

Enjoy the weekend,
John
