JAKE HUMPHREY ON THE MILAN DERBY Talk about timing - this Sunday live Italian football makes its first appearance on the BBC. The 270th 'derby della Madonnina' sees the coming together of Milan's two famous footballing factories - and two central figures that always command our attention. Love them or loathe them, David Beckham and Jose Mourinho always get debate raging among football fans, and possibly more so now than ever. By Sunday, the future of England's 108-cap warrior might be a little clearer as Milan look to make the Leytonstone legend a full-time member of the famed Rossoneri. And there may be no better place for a player of his age to ply his trade, as Milan look to have perfected player longevity like no other team. Amazingly, 16 of their first-team squad are over 30, with Paolo Maldini now in his 40s. Our other central figure to the drama at the San Siro, a man Chelsea fans will be eyeing with fond memories after recent days, is the enigmatic Jose Mourinho. Incredibly, the former Blues boss has not lost a home fixture in 109 league games (since February 2002) and has picked up where he left off in West London, guiding the Nerazzuri to top spot, 7 points clear of Juventus. To add to the drama, for AC Milan to have any chance of winning Serie A they surely need to beat their fiercest rivals on Sunday. It will be a rare foray into domestic European action for us, but with the sub-plots provided by Beckham and Mourinho, some of Europe's top talent on display, and Man Utd fans getting a chance to size up their forthcoming Champions League opponents, it should be a fascinating encounter. Join Jake Humphrey, Alan Hansen and Roy Hodgson for the Milan derby this Sunday, from 1900 GMT on BBC Three and the BBC Sport website. |
