JAKE HUMPHREY ON AMERICAN FOOTBALL
It's amazing to think that it was 12 months ago that the New York Giants and the Miami Dolphins dropped in for a match at our national stadium on a clichéd wet and windy British evening.

It was part of a mammoth road trip that ended in a dusty Arizona with the Giants emerging victorious against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.

Well this time it's the San Diego Chargers and the New Orleans Saints who will hope that Wembley can do for them what it did for Eli Manning and the boys a year ago.

You see, both teams are looking for something to kickstart their season.

They are inconsistent having won just three of their opening seven games.

They are scoring well with the Chargers putting 138 points on the board by week four, but both need to improve their defence if they are to stand any chance of making the play-offs and eventually the Super Bowl itself.

The players will look to draw some inspiration from the 'play-off' atmosphere that is generated by the well-educated and deserving British-based NFL fans.

There are some big names on show.

For the Chargers there's LaDainian Tomlinson, one of the best running backs in NFL history, and Philip Rivers, the quarterback who has guided his side to the play-offs in both of the last two seasons.

Sadly the Saints will be without their star name, Reggie Bush, who is back in the States for work on an injured knee.

But in Drew Brees they currently have the league's most prolific quarterback.

As for the BBC team, well the consistent and hard working 'players' player' Mike Carlson will be in great form as always.

The flair will come from the one and only Jerry Rice, the San Francisco 49ers' legendary wide receiver and one of the greatest players to ever grace the game.

I'm keen to see if he's still got it with one of my legendary 15-yard Hail Mary's in the Wembley car park after the game!

Enjoy your weekend,

Jake
