COLIN JACKSON ON THE EUROPEAN INDOORS
European athletics is where it is at and if you conquer Europe you can conquer the world.

The European Indoor Championships are a brilliant opportunity for young athletes to get used to competition.

It's unfortunate that the British team has been decimated by injuries, but there are still two very strong gold medal contenders in Dwain Chambers and Mo Farah.

Chambers is the overwhelming favourite in the 60m event and will face competition from team-mates Simeon Williamson and Craig Pickering.

Williamson is so promising and talented and I see him as the biggest threat to Chambers, although watch out for the Italians who have surprisingly produced some good sprinters.

Mo Farah is having an exceptional and outstanding indoor season. He has found himself as an athlete and I had a sit down chat with him recently and he told me that he is loving the sport at the moment.

He has been injury free which is the most important thing for an athlete and he is full of confidence and I expect him to win gold.

Watch out also for Sarah Claxton in the 60m hurdles. She was the only European to make the Olympic 100m Hurdles final in Beijing and she could really impress here.

It's a shame that a lot of the big names in European athletics aren't competing and have instead chosen to come here to commentate for TV channels.

But there is still plenty to look out for and if I had to pick an event to watch I suggest tuning in to see the Russian 4x400m team - they are an exceptional bunch, watch them show their dominance again.

There is an excitable atmosphere here in Turin and we are set for a great weekend of athletics.

Enjoy the weekend,
Colin
